During high-intensity and/or long-duration sports practice, the body suffers from muscular tension and energy burnout. As a result, in proportion to the intensity and duration of the activity and the level of physical fitness, certain muscular damage is caused due to the mechanical repetition of the muscular contraction and tissue vibrations. On the other hand, the demand for energy leads to a depletion of glycogen, which requires other energy sources to be used and, in turn, heightens muscle deterioration. This muscular damage has a common source: the inflammation caused by molecules known as inflammatory cytokines and the increase of oxidising substances that damage the muscular fibre. All of this leads to a drop in sports performance.

Various doctoral theses and studies published on Polypodium leucotomos (EXPLY 37®) Phlebodium variety show how this atomised extract plays a modulating role on inflammatory cytokines and oxidative activity. This enhances the protection of myocytes (muscular cells), as demonstrated by studies conducted on hormone cortisol and the biochemical parameter of creatine phosphokinase muscle damage (CPK). On the other hand, the same modulating effect on the concentration of hydroperoxides is also noted.

Groups that took the EXPLY 37® had a statistically significant drop in these parameters (p<0.05) compared to those who took a placebo.

As a result of the reduction in muscular breakdown (drop in CPK and cortisol (p<0.05), an increase in strength was noted.

Meanwhile, the protection against cellular damage helped to improve aerobic endurance (p<0.05), allowing for more intense workouts, delaying anaerobic metabolism and the consequences it entails in terms of the build-up of acid substances and muscular fatigue.
